|Personal History|| Ian Mackenzie was born on June 20, 2367 in Spokane, Washington to Harlan and Marie Mackenzie, a schoolteacher and civilian researcher at Starfleet Base Lewis-McChord. From an early age, Ian showed uncanny marksmanship ability, taking up archery in nearby forests at the age of five. He also took up the cello at the age of 12, becoming a member of his school's orchestra.
As Ian began formal schooling, he began showing signs of being a minor troublemaker that showed academic ability but a lack of willingness to use it. Ian often used his talent for archery to put arrows through the windows of the school buildings.
Near the end of his senior year of secondary school, Ian's grades never slipped and despite his spotty disciplinary record, he was recommended for Starfleet Academy in the summer of 2383.
Completing the preparatory school, Cadet Fourth Class Mackenzie was formally a member of Starfleet. In his fifth week of the Academy, he discovered his aptitude for phaser marksmanship on the Academy range and was brought to the attention of one of the Tactical Theory instructors, who encouraged him to apply his abilities toward becoming a Tactical Officer. Ian accepted the challenge and requested to be assigned to the Marine Option Program.
On his First Summer in 2385, Ian was sent to the Recondo School for Long Range Reconnaissance as part of his Marine training. Earning his Recondo badge, Ian returned to the Academy as a Cadet Third Class.
In his third year, Ian took up his second major of Flight Control, deciding that it was the easiest way to be assigned aboard a starship. Ian flourished here and embarked aboard the USS Hammersley, a Defiant Class training ship in the summer of 2386 for two weeks before being assigned to the PHOENIX RAVEN Course for Advanced Security Operations.
Returning to the Academy as a Cadet First Class, Ian discovered his propensity as a leader. In his first semester, he served as the Captain of the Starfleet Academy Archery Team, earning the Allied Service Championship Medal.
In his second semester, Ian requested assignment aboard the Intrepid Class USS Cassiopeia for his Field Training Cruise and final assignment before commissioning. Midway through the cruise, the Cassiopeia came under attack by rogue Jem Hadar forces and were boarded. Ian, along with many of the surviving personnel, evaded captured and helped repel the boarding parties. For his conduct and actions during the boarding action, he was awarded the Starfleet Cross with 'V' device.
At the end of the year, Ian was informed that due to Marine Corps manning issues, that his request for a commission in the Corps had been denied. Given the option of pursuing a Fleet based commission, Ian accepted and was commissioned at the rank of Ensign. Remaining at the Academy as a staff aide to the Academy Commandant, Admiral James Tolan, Ian was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade early the next year. Following the end of his staff aide tour, Ian requested reassignment to the USS Beifong in 2388 as a Tactical Officer to stop the apparent stagnation of his career. Following a disastrous relationship with the Beifong's Commanding Officer, he was issued a Letter of Reprimand and reassigned to the USS Newton in 2389.
