Did Someone Say Spacial Anomalies?
Location: USS Newton
Charlie had gotten about half-way to the Captain's ready room when it occurred to him that she might not be there. Stopping short in the hallway and slapping his commbadge, "Hey Cap... West. Where you hiding? Do you have a sec?"
"I'm in astronav. You're welcome to meet me here," Diana answered. "I'm almost done here, so be quick on your feet. I'm prepping for the briefing."
"Moving like lightning, ma'am," Charlie said, turning a hard 180 and bolting to the nearest turbolift as he closed the channel.
A few moments later, he was jogging into Astronav, "Did I hear right? About the first mission? Spacial anomalies?" He asked, sounding far too hopeful.
"You sure did. We're heading out to investigate something that the USS Elliot found. There's not a lot out there," at least anymore, she thought, "so hopefully it'll remain undisturbed by the time we get there."
"How can I help?" He asked, eagerly. "I know that I'm not exactly in that realm of science, but I want to make sure you've got everything you need," He said, smiling at her brightly.
"You are exceedingly cheerful today. I'd almost think that you're excited." Diana grinned as well. She was excited as well, but he was damn near gleeful. "We're going in fairly uninformed, so there's not actually a lot to gather on this one."
"I love stuff like this, Captain," He said, grinning back. "I love the unknown. I'll make sure our shields are doubled up, and scanners are ready for deep dives. I've... actually got a sensor drone I was developing on my last ship that I'd love to give a spin. It's unmanned and built in a way that it should be able to go up against just about anything without losing contact with us... I can have it ready to go if you want to try it out," He explained, sounding like a doting father as he spoke of it.
"Sounds like a perfect place to try it out. The only description that the Elliot gave was stripe like formations that leaked deep space matter. I have a lot of questions about that description." Diana began, shaking her head. "But the Elliot CO left it as that in his report."
"I may only be a warp physicist... but... I feel like 'deep space matter' isn't a thing," He said, chuckling a little to himself. "I'll get my drone ready. She'll need to launch from the shuttle bay if that's okay," He said.
Diana grinned smugly. "Just don't tell them that. Matter is matter no matter where it is, it'd still be spatial matter, yeah. Dark matter- now there's a different beast."
"If the rifts are dropping dark matter... then I'm gonna request we keep our distance," Charlie replied with a laugh. "I might not use my drone if that's the case," He said, sheepishly.
"Will you let me give my briefing and stop getting ahead of yourself. I never said there was dark matter," the CO laughed. "I said it'd be something if it was..." she added with a grin. "I promise, I won't knowingly tank your baby."
Charlie laughed, "Naw, boss I wasn't getting ahead of ya, just saying *if* they were," He said with a chuckle. "I just wanted to check in with you, see what you needed from me. I'll make sure we're in tip-top shape getting there. Hopefully we'll discover something new and exciting right out of the gate," He said, smiling broadly.
"Hopefully," she agreed. "I'd like to say that we'll have a career full of new and interesting finds, just not in the Chinese warning way."
"Yeah, please not that," Charlie said with a laugh. "That's a kind of 'new and interesting' that I can live without," He said, giving his new CO a smile.
Absently it occurred to Diana that she liked the man. He had an easy smile. That was rare in this day and age. "Okay, well, I'll see you in an hour at the briefing. Come with info on your drone and we'll see what we can come up with once all of the cooks are in the kitchen."
"Yes ma'am! I'll be there," He said, clearly excited. "Time to get to the good stuff," He said with a wave as he started off down the hallway.
